Figures for sales for the major players in the games industry have been released for the month of April and believe me...there was really no surprise to speak of at all. First of all, let's look at Nintendo with the Wii selling 714,200 units and the DS 414,800 units. Keep in mind this is just for one month. This means that the Wii by itself managed to outsell the Xbox 360, PS3, PS2 and PSP when you combine the sales for those consoles. This is simply staggering and amazing that one console managed to beat out 4 other consoles which are much more powerful that what it can do. As expected, GTA IV took first place and third for software sold across Xbox 360 and PS3 with Mario Kart coming second with 1.12 million copies sold. At the end of the day, Nintendo walked away with 6 of the top 10 games sold in April.
Microsoft managed to outsell the PS3 with 180,000 units sold but it only did with a slim margin of 900 units...that's not much to write home about now, is it? MS have begun to rub it into Sony that the version of GTA IV outsold the Sony version. Sony have hit back reminding MS that the Xbox 360 has a much larger user base than the PS3 does.
As for Sony, they managed to shift 187,100 units for the PS3 while the PSP shifted 197,200 during April. Concerned that the handheld is outselling its larger sibling? They don't seem to think so and aren't looking too much into it. Sony are still adamant that gamers will flock back to the PS3 in due course but for the meantime, gaming seems to be a one way street with Nintendo way too far in the lead to be concerned with the likes of Sony and MS.
