Miyamoto Talks On Japanese Development

Just as Nintendo's download service, Wiiware, went live in the US today, Nintendo's creative genius Shigeru Miyamoto spoke about Japanese developers being less enthusiastic about taking a risk on new development ideas.

"I think America has always been better at creating unique products," he was quoted as saying today. "In Japan, the technology required to create videogames tends to be concentrated in the bigger corporations," he continued before adding, "game publishers tend to make conservative games that will always be profitable, rather than taking risks on experimental games."

Funnily enough when Wiiware launched in Japan, which is an excellent springboard for independent development companies, all the titles came from the regular big hitters such as Bandai Namco, Square Enix and Hudson.

Shiggy added, ""Here in the United States, you have these independent developers who have managed to get the skills and the training and the development, and also have managed to get access to the technology and the hardware needed to develop it."

"They're able to let their own personality and their own kind of unique interests really flourish in the games that they're creating."

He did add in closing though that he thought it would be cool to try his hand at his one time programming feat, Donkey Kong.

"Yeah, I think it would be fun to do that."
